The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday issued a notice to drug manufacturers, citing "significant concerns about potential adverse effects associated with the administration's use of its drug."
The FDA had been reviewing the safety of Viagra, the brand-name drug for impotence in men, and concluded that the drug's safety in men is "substantially below the FDA's established safety standards."
The agency's report was published in theJournal of the American Medical Association, the journal of the American Medical Association that was written by its medical director, Dr. Peter Zirkelmann.
The FDA noted that Viagra, marketed by Pfizer, was "not recommended for the treatment of erectile dysfunction or impotence in men," according to the report.
The FDA's analysis found that Viagra, which was sold by Pfizer, was more effective in patients with impotence than a placebo, according to the report. "Our findings have important implications for the management of impotence in men and women, and should be taken into account in patients with this condition."
The FDA has also asked Pfizer to provide more information about the safety of Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs. In addition, the FDA said it would provide Pfizer with more information about Viagra and its effects on other related conditions, such as diabetes and hypertension.
The FDA has not received any official regulatory submissions on Viagra, other erectile dysfunction drugs or other treatments for erectile dysfunction. The agency has previously issued a safety communication with several drug companies that have not responded to the FDA's notice.
